Among new legislation introduced this week in California is Assembly Bill 2199. Apparently, for the last 43 years there has been a section of the California Welfare and Institutions Code which requires the Dept Of Mental Health to "plan, conduct and cause to be conducted scientific research into the causes and cures of sexual deviation, including deviations conducive to sex crimes against children, and the causes and cures of homosexuality, and into methods of identifying potential sex offenders".
Long Beach democrat and assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal has introduced the bill to strike the language from the code. Makes you wonder what other outdated language is laying around in the law books in California…
