In October of 1998, Matthew Shepard , 21 years old and living in Wyoming, was robbed and violently beaten by two men who had offered to give him a ride home. Left tied to a fence, Shepard was not found for 18 hours. After five days in the hospital, he died from his injuries.
The Laramie Project is a play by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project that dramatizes the aftermath and reaction to this horrific crime. Based on over 200 interviews with the inhabitants of the town, as well as the thoughts of the company members and published news reports, The Laramie Project is a moving, thought provoking and insightful revelation into homophobia and consequence. HBO developed a feature film, also entitled The Laramie Project , which aired in 2002, with superb acting and a no holds barred emotional punch.
