Same sex weddings are now underway in Rhode Island as the state’s marriage equality law takes effect. ABC News reports:
Same-sex marriages have begun in Rhode Island, and local officials for the first time are issuing marriage licenses to gay couples who wish to wed in the state. Gay marriage became legal in Rhode Island and Minnesota at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, bringing the number of states allowing same-sex marriage to 13. Officials around Rhode Island began issuing licenses when clerks’ offices opened at 8:30 a.m., making marriage an option for gay couples everywhere in New England.
And over in Minnesota, same sex couples started marrying at midnight. TwinCities.comreports:
Standing four miles from where Gov. Mark Dayton in May signed gay-marriage into law, Reid Bordson and Paul Nolle were pronounced “legally married” at quarter past twelve Thursday. The Bloomington couple helped usher same-sex marriage into Minnesota with a midnight wedding at St. Paul’s Como Park Conservatory, with friends and family gathered among the fragrant lilies in the Sunken Garden. “To know we got married and were kind of the official first wedding in the capital city, where all this political action happened, it’s insane. It’s insane. It is just super fun to know that we’re part of history, and we’re really hoping that we represented the hundreds of other people who are getting married tonight and during the day tomorrow,” said Bordson after the service.
