Sneak peek at "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"…….
A review of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”

Thanks to Y 101 I was able to treat myself, Brandy and 2 of my close friends to a sneak peak of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, July 12th. The wait for 2 hours in the heat was horrible. Sweat dripping from all over parts of my body, those parts I’d like not to address. As the line started moving at 7:00, my anticipation started growing. By the time 7:30 rolled around I was ready for the show to begin.
Finally, after some introductions of various radio personalities the show was under way. Finally! The sweat was starting to dry up. The moisture on my back was depleting. Why did it have to be so hot that day? Anyways, let’s get back to the show. I knew this movie was not a “remake” of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, I knew it was to be more like Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have not read the book. I didn’t know Charlie had a dad living. I always thought his dad must have took off when he found out Charlie’s mom was pregnant. Turns out, Charlie does have a dad, and his dad worked in a tooth paste factory. Oddly enough, everyone in the show had horrible teeth except for Willy. The plot is pretty much the same as the old movie. 5 lucky winners, 4 bad kids, 1 good kid. Grandpa Joe isn’t as selfish in this new version as he was in the original (he was my least favorite in the first movie).
Willy on the other hand was very……quirky and dark. His sense of humor was a bit peculiar.
His teeth were remarkable. I think I’ve only seen teeth like that as demonstrations at the orthodontists. Johnny Depp does such a wonderful job bringing this character to life. I’m not saying this is his best roll; however, I’m not sure anyone else could have captured the eccentric-ness of this Willy better than him.
Oh and lets not forget the Oompa Loompas. How could we do that? They were the only part that kept the musical aspect of the movie. No, they didn’t keep the little ditties from the first Willy movie, they had new ones. Quite catchy as well. Very cute. I’m not sure they are as catching as the first Oompa’s but they’ll do. They still come from Loompa Land and they still had to run from the Wang Doodle and the Vermisios Knitts.
One thing I hate about movies and this one included……I hate it when a movie is pushing the 2 hour mark and wraps the ending up in 10 minutes. They go through the story line for almost 2 hours and then tie the ends up in 10 minutes. I’d like for the story to take about 1 hour and 15-30 minutes and then tie the ends up for 15-30 minutes. Is that too much to ask?
Overall, I would have to give this movie a B. It was pretty good. Being as it is that I LOVE “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” it was hard for me to believe any of the story straying from what I already know from the original Willy flick. With that being said, it was still a good movie, and I will definitely recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have to stand in line for 2 hours. And, I’ll definitely be adding this to my DVD collection.
