Supporting Students at Fresno State

With tuition fees constantly rising, the cost of a college education is a common concern for countless of students. A non-profit endowment at Fresno State called the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund is bringing aid to students who truly need it. The Fund’s goal is to support students with good academic standing who demonstrate pride in the community. The recipients of the Fund share the common goals of receiving an education and giving back to the community.
Established in 2005 by Peter Robertson, a three-time Fresno State graduate, and officially recognized by the Fresno State Alumni Association in 2006, the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund has already surpassed $50,000 in donations to its endowment. The principal is invested in a diverse portfolio while the earnings are distributed as student scholarships on an annual basis. All past recipients of the scholarship have made donations back to the Fund to assist students in the future.
One generous man, William N. Beck, passed away on July 2, 2007, and entrusted $100,000 to the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund. This bequest is the largest gift to an alumni association scholarship endowment at any of the California State University ’s 23 campuses. He graduated from Fresno State College in 1952, with a degree in business marketing. And, he had visited the campus in the fall 2006 to attend the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala and the announcement of civil engineering major Jared Lindo as the inaugural Bulldog Pride Fund scholar. Mr. Beck left impressed with his alma mater and the caliber of its students.
Robertson credits Mr. Beck with good advice that helped build the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund rapidly to the point it was able to award three scholarships in 2007: a second to Lindo and grants to Adrian Quintero (senior majoring in criminology and Latin American studies) and Sara Martinez (senior majoring in social work).
Mr. Beck clearly loved Fresno State and his dedication is a true example of Bulldog loyalty, pride and spirit. It is people like William Beck and entities such as the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund that provide hope to deserving students at Fresno State .
Today, total donations to the Bulldog Pride Scholarship Fund have exceeded $150,000. Mr. Beck’s gift, along with the support of nearly 300 donors, will positively affect the lives of students at Fresno State for tomorrow and beyond.
