Social work is a human rights profession committed to social justice for all communities. An important part of social work education is learning how to apply ethical principles to working with a diversity of cultures and oppressions. A couple of Fresno State social work instructors are interested in having an informal and unofficial discussion about how social work teaching should address the needs of LGBTQ communities. The purpose of this forum is to discuss issues that people in and associated with LGBTQ communities find of significance to social work education: what should social work students learn about the diversity and needs of LGBTQ communities?
If you are interested in joining the conversation, please come by and contribute your ideas.
Among the topics we will be discussing:
- What does a social worker need to know to work with a client from an LGBTQ community?
- What kinds of skills would a culturally competent social worker need to work with people from LGBTQ communities?
- What would people from LGBTQ communities want to say to teachers of social workers?
