In a significant move towards supporting the LGBTQ+ community, the Fresno City Council allocated $80,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to seven local LGBTQ+ community-based organizations at their meeting on August 29, 2024. This funding was secured through the efforts of Council President Annalisa Perea, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing the resources available to the LGBTQ+ community in Fresno.
The organizations receiving these much-needed funds are Trans-e-motion $10,000; BlaQueer Fresno $20,000; Casita Feliz $13,500; Dulce Upfront Labs $13,600; South Tower Land Trust $5,000; LGBTQ Fresno $12,740; Oasis Legal $5,160. The allocation will support a variety of initiatives aimed at improving the well-being, legal support, and social connectivity of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout the city.
Notably, Councilmember Miguel Arias made a last-minute adjustment to the allocation for South Tower Land Trust, reducing their funding from $25,000 to $5,000. The remaining $20,000 will be reserved for future projects.
The allocation passed with overwhelming support from the council, with all members voting in favor except for long-time LGBTQ+ opponent Gary Bredefeld.
Jason Scott, Executive Director of LGBTQ Fresno, expressed his gratitude for the funding, stating, "This generous support from the City of Fresno will allow us to continue expanding our youth services and social connectedness events for another year. It is a vital step in ensuring that the LGBTQ+ community in Fresno remains supported and connected."
This funding represents a significant victory for Fresno's LGBTQ+ community and underscores the importance of continued advocacy and support at the local government level. The awarded funds will help sustain and grow essential services that contribute to the health, safety, and empowerment of LGBTQ+ individuals in Fresno.
Looking towards 2025, Council President Annalisa Perea has also helped to secure 75k for LGBTQ+ community based organizations.
