A new resource is available for gender-minority Californians looking for affirming mental health services.
The TransPower Project (TTPP, formerly Queer Works) is an online therapy platform for transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals who require mental health services. Those services include crisis intervention therapy, in-field therapy groups, and harm reduction groups, as well as referrals for continued mental health care and substance use treatment. All of these resources are available free of charge, regardless of ability to pay, thanks to a grant from the government of Riverside County.
In addition to mental health services, the organization offers assistance with housing, employment, healthcare, and personal care. Individuals in need can access workshops covering resume building, interview skills, and job applications, and staff members will walk individuals who need help through applying for housing assistance and medical insurance. These additional social services help support patrons’ mental health by removing barriers and relieving stress that are often placed in the way of gender minorities.
Based in Palm Springs, The TransPower Project was started by Jacob Rostovsky, a transgender man “whose personal experiences facing rejection and discrimination in healthcare inspired the creation of the organization”. By design, every member of TTPP’s staff identifies as LGBTQ+, and 75% identify as a gender minority. The organization’s structure is built around triaging – helping TGI+ individuals escape from unhealthy situations through connections with local resources and staying in healthy situations through continued checkups.
