The long running annual event known as Kampout Fresno is just around the corner, taking place on September 8, 9 & 10th. Organization of the event has been taken over by a new group beginning this year, with a revamped committee consisting of representatives from various LGBT groups including the Knights Of Malta, Imperial Dove Court and Golden State Bears, as well as independent parties. All committee members are long time Kampout participants. This newly formed group is striving for a varied representation of the community at large and is dedicated to a longer period of planning each year in order to achieve a smooth and well organized event.
I spoke to Ginger Selsor, a member of the Kampout Committee, about the upcoming festivities. While last year saw somewhere in the range of 40-50 participants, Ginger sees this year’s numbers possibly increasing to the range of 150-200 campers.
Since camping and “roughing it” has different meanings to different people, Ginger told me there are those that camp it the old fashioned way and those who bring fully equipped RV’s. If you’re interested in the event but don’t like the idea of a tent, you can rent an RV at RV America, and Ginger assured me they can make it through the mountain roads.
The theme of this year’s Kampout is Sleepy Hollow Spooktacular. The charge for the three day event is only $20, which covers everything including camping fees. This year will see food service expanded, to include breakfast, brunch and dinner. There will also be 2 Beer Busts and a progressive cocktail party. The site of the event is the same, taking place at the Texas Flats Campground in the Sierra National Forest. Any fees collected which exceed the funds needed to operate Kampout will be donated to local charities.
Events scheduled for the weekend include Kampsite Kontest (Site Decorations), Costume Kontest, Needle in the Haystack & Scavenger Hunt, Yacht Regatta and a new addition, the Kamptown Races sponsored by the High Lesbian Social Klub. Activities culminate in the Kampstravaganza on Saturday night, with a talent show and the crowning of Kamp King & Queen.
