Thanks to Republicans (can they really do anything right…anything??) the attempt to get Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repealed failed today in the Senate. The vote was 56-43, falling just short of the 60 votes needed. Harry Reid actually voted against the bill, although it was a strategic move which allows him the possibility of bringing the issue back up at a later date.
The bill was attached to the defense bill, which funded the troops, including a pay raise, but that wasn’t enough to get it to pass. Two Democrats joined Republicans in voting against the bill, Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor.
This leaves the repeal of DADT on shaky ground, at best.
Click Here to watch a video of General James Conway explaining that if DADT were to be repealed, it’s likely they would have to house the soldiers in a different manner than they do now, since so many soldiers would object to being housed with open homosexuals. So soldiers that have never had their personal preferences considered in terms of military policy, would in this one case be granted the opportunity to make the rules instead of merely following them. All because of the terror of being in the same room with a homosexual, which is a situation that already exists, and has existed since the dawn of the military.
